Job Description

Under the general direction of the OPERS FitLife Program Coordinator, the Group Exercise Instructor is responsible to safely and effectively lead group exercise classes for UCSC students, employees, and OPERS members; assist in program administration; manage class-related facilities and equipment; provide excellent customer service; and participate in program marketing.
75% - Exercise Leadership:
- Design, choreograph, and lead group exercise classes according to current industry standards for safety and effectiveness, including proper warm-ups, cool-downs, and exercise/movement progressions.
- Teach, demonstrate, and promote proper class-specific exercise technique and form.
- Be fully set-up and prepared to teach at least 5-minutes prior to scheduled start.
- Begin and end class sessions on-time.
- Introduce self and the class at the beginning of each session.
- Maintain a positive, encouraging, and non-intimidating classroom atmosphere.
- Select and play appropriate music at appropriate volume-levels.
- Provide safe, appropriate, and effective exercise modifications when needed.
- Frequently update and modify class design, choreography, and music.
- Maintain required professional certifications for the classes being led.
- Maintain CPR/AED certification
10% - Program Administration:
- Attend all required staff meetings and trainings.
- Complete and submit quarterly self-evaluations and peer-evaluations.
- Facilitate pass-validation procedures in the absence of classroom attendants.
- Read and respond to all communications from supervisor in a timely manner.
- Promote and enforce program policies (i.e. class capacity limits, late-admission restrictions, admission-pass requirements, etc.)
5% - Facility & Equipment Management:
- Report any unsafe facility and/or equipment conditions or repair-needs immediately.
- Return classrooms to clean, organized, and secure condition after each session.
- Learn and consistently exercise proper use of facilities and equipment.
5% - Customer Service:
- Greet participants warmly, enthusiastically, and by name (smiling, eye contact, etc.)
- Communicate participant issues, concerns, and feedback to supervisor immediately.
- Be able to accurately answer questions regarding admission fees, sales procedures, class schedules, facility locations/layouts, and program information sources.
5% - Marketing:
- Make pre- and/or post-class announcements regarding program information (i.e. new policies, schedule changes, upcoming promotions, etc.).
- Participate in demonstration classes when available.
- Update biographical and class-description information on website when appropriate.

Job Requirements

- Minimum of 3 months of experience consistently (at least once per week) teaching and/or assisting in group exercise classes with college-age participants.
- Minimum of 1 current certification or training from 1 of the following categories:
* A current nationally recognized Aerobics certification (ACE, AFAA, NETA, or comparable)
* A degree in a related field (Kinesiology, Physical Education, Dance, or comparable)
* A current specialty certification for training from a nationally recognized certifying agency (Yoga, Pilates, Spinning, Zumba, Barre, or comparable).
- Ability to effectively relate to and be sensitive to the needs of a diverse population of participants in regards to age, ethnicity, sexual-orientation, physical ability, and exercise experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively, professionally, and courteously with a diverse group of individuals.
- Excellent time management skills that will ensure punctuality to all work-related events.
- Ability to maintain a neat and healthy appearance.
- Current CPR, AED, and First-Aid Certification.
