Job Description

Under the direction of the Fitness Program Coordinator, the Personal Fitness Trainer provides fitness evaluations, designs personal training programs, and works with individuals to achieve their personal fitness goals.
75% - Personal Fitness Instruction:
- Design individualized exercise programs for a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and community members.
- Teach, demonstrate, and promote proper class-specific exercise techniques.
- Be fully set-up and prepared to greet client at least 5 minutes prior to each session.
- Begin and end training session on-time.
- Maintain a positive, encouraging, and non-intimidating workout atmosphere.
- Provide safe, appropriate, and effective exercise modifications when needed.
- Update and modify workout designs as needed and when appropriate.
- Maintain professional certifications for all types of training being prescribed.
- Maintain CPR/AED certification.
10% - Program Administration:
- Assist in administration of client consultation and tracking procedures, including oversight of health history screening, liability waiver signatures, verification of payment, and reporting of session usage.
- Document training activities and prescribed exercises for each client.
- Ensure clients have signed all waivers prior to the beginning of training packages.
- Attend all required staff meetings and trainings.
- Complete and submit quarterly self-evaluations.
- Read and respond to all communications from supervisor in a timely manner.
5% - Facility & Equipment Management:
- Report any unsafe facility and/or equipment conditions or repair-needs immediately.
- Return facilities to clean, organized, and secure condition after each session.
- Learn and consistently exercise proper use of facilities and equipment.
- Assist in the promotion and enforcement of facility policies.
5% - Customer Service:
- Greet customers warmly, enthusiastically, and by name (smiling, eye contact, etc.)
- Communicate client issues, concerns, and feedback to supervisor immediately.
- Be able to accurately answer questions regarding program fees, sales procedures, facility locations/layouts, and program information sources.
5% - Marketing:
- Make pre- and/or post-class announcements regarding program information (i.e. new policies, schedule changes, upcoming promotions, etc.).
- Participate in demonstration classes when available.
- Update biographical and class-description information on website when appropriate.

Job Requirements

- Minimum of three months of equivalent experience consistently (at least once per week) training or directly assisting in the training of personal fitness clients.
- A current nationally-recognized Personal Trainer certification (ACSM, NSCA, NASM, ACE, AFAA, or comparable).
- Ability to perform fitness assessments and consultations in order to determine clients' health history, exercise experience, wellness goals, and current fitness status using a variety of interview techniques and fitness tests.
- Ability to design and prescribe safe and effective exercise programs based on participant's current health, fitness level, and goals.
- Ability to effectively instruct participants on proper exercise techniques, use of fitness equipment, and fitness concepts (i.e. attaining suggested exercise heart rate).
- Ability to effectively relate to and be sensitive to the needs of a diverse population of potential customers in regards to age, ethnicity, sexual-orientation, physical ability, and exercise experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively, professionally, and courteously with a diverse population of potential customers.
- Excellent time management skills that will ensure punctuality to all work-related events.
- Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional athletic setting.
